Progressive Die Stamping of a Heat Shield for the Automotive Industry

The heat shield shown here was designed for use in an automotive turbocharger application. It was made from 321-stainless steel because of its durability, strength, and heat dissipation characteristics. The finished component had an outside diameter of 83.44mm, an inside diameter of 22mm, and a height of 23.57mm, and was manufactured to tolerances of ± 0.075mm.

Manufacturing consisted of progressive die stamping, on a 200 ton punch press. All parts were laser etched with a bar code that included date of manufacture, serial number, part and revision number, and vendor code. We now produce over 100,000 of these parts annually.
